How to Install Red Alert 1 on Windows XP

Woohoo! The original Command & Conquer: Red Alert —one of the greatest RTS video games of all time— has been released as freeware! Thank you very much EA! Although I wish I'd known you were going to do this before I went out and purchased the compilation pack, Command & Conquer: The First Decade as one of the main reasons I bought it was to get Red Alert again. (grrrr!... Oh by the way, I'll need some cheese to go with my whine here... heh heh...)

Anywho, this page will walk you through the process of getting this classic PC game up and running on your Windows XP machine without having to burn anything to a CD.

Here's an overview of what you're going to do:

  1. Download the necessary files
  2. Install a RAR extracting program (if you don't have one)
  3. Unpack the Red Alert .rar file using the RAR extractor
  4. Install MagicISO
  5. Mount the Red Alert ISO file
  6. Install Red Alert
  7. Install the XP patch and make some minor tweaks
  8. Play the game!

Okay let's start off with getting all our goodies. Here's where to...

Download the Necessary Files

Download the Red Alert game files here:
Download complete Red Alert Allied game files here
Download complete Red Alert Soviet game files here

These are File Shack downloads and will require you to sign up for a free account to execute the download. I checked it out and it's no problem. (And thanks to Dr. Watson for finding these new links.)

Download the trial version of WinRAR here:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

The WinRAR program will allow you to unpack the Red Alert game files. Download WinRAR 3.80 (Trial version).

Download MagicISO here:
http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm

MagicISO will allow you to run Red Alert directly from the Red Alert ISO file on your computer instead of having to burn the game to a CD and then using the CD to run the game.

Okay now that you've got all your goodies, let's get on with how to...

Install WinRAR and unpack Red Alert game files

  1. Install WinRAR by double clicking on your downloaded wrar380.exe installation file (go with all the default settings).
  2. After installing WinRAR, use Windows to browse to where you saved your downloaded Red Alert game files. We'll use the Allied disc in this tutorial. Double click on ra95_allied.rar to open it in WinRAR.
  3. In the WinRAR program, drag-and-drop the ra95_allied.iso file to your desktop.
  4. Close WinRAR.

Install MagicISO and mount the Red Alert .ISO file

Don't worry. This is not nearly as complicated as it sounds.

Here's how to proceed...

  1. Install MagicISO by double clicking on your downloaded setup_magicdisc.exe file (go with all the default settings). This will automatically create a virtual DVD/CD drive on your computer with its own drive letter (the letter assigned to your virtual drive will depend on how many hard drives, partitions and DVD drives you have). You'll also have a little MagicISO icon in your system tray:
MagicISO icon open in system tray
  2. Right click on the MagicISO icon in your system tray and click on Virtual CD/DVD >> [DRIVE LETTER]: No Media >> Mount...
Mounting an ISO image in MagicISO (1)
Mounting an ISO image in MagicISO (2)
  3. Use the "Mount CD/DVD image" dialog to browse to your extracted ra95_allied.iso file, click to select it and then click OPEN.
  4. The Command & Conquer: Red Alert menu will appear...
Command & Conquer: Red Alert menu screen

DO NOT DO ANYTHING IN THIS MENU. Do NOT click Proceed, do not pass Go, do not collect $200, etc, nada, bumpkiss. Instead simply click Exit to close this menu immediately.

Now, having done all of the above, here's how to...

Install Red Alert

  1. Go to your desktop, double click on My Computer, right click on your new virtual drive with the label CD1 (J:) and click on Open.
  2. Right click on setup.exe, click on Properties >> Compatibility and then click to CHECK "Run this program in compatibility mode for: (Windows 95 should be selected by default. Leave it as such.)
Setting Windows compatibility mode for the Red Alert setup.exe file...
  3. Click OK
  4. Now double click on setup.exe to install Red Alert. During the installation process, when you get to the screen prompting you to install DirectX 3 audio and video drivers, click to CLEAR the box beside DirectX audio and video drivers. You don't need these drivers.
Don't install DirectX while installing Red Alert 1!
  5. A few steps later in the installation process, you'll be prompted to install Westwood Chat. If you wish to play Red Alert multiplayer online, install Westwood Chat. If not, click Cancel to skip installing Westwood Chat.
  6. When the installation finishes, you'll be prompted to restart your computer. Do this.

If you try playing Red Alert now, you'll probably get an error message reading "The procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL".
The procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL
To avoid getting this error message, you'll have to...

Install the Windows XP Patch

  1. After installing Red Alert and restarting your computer, click here to download the XP patch and save the XP patch (RA108USP.EXE) to your Red Alert installation folder. (By default, this is C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT).
  2. Then double click on the RA108USP.EXE file to open the patch. This will create 3 files in your Red Alert folder named Patch.exe, Patch.rtp and Patch.txt.
  3. Double-click on Patch.exe to apply the patch.

Now if you try to play Red Alert, you'll probably get a black screen of nothingness and/or a strange error message saying "A privileged instruction was executed at address" blah etc.
A privileged instruction was executed at address...
To avoid getting this error, you'll have to...

Set the RA95.EXE Compatibility Mode

  1. Go to your Red Alert installation folder (typically C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT)
  2. Right click on RA95.EXE and click on Properties >> Compatibility
  3. Click to CHECK "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" (Windows 95 should be selected by default. Leave it as such.)
  4. Click OK to apply the setting.

ALL DONE.   :o)

Now you can play Red Alert. (Woohoo!...)

To do this:

  1. Right click on the MagicISO icon in your system tray and click on Virtual CD/DVD >> [DRIVE LETTER]: No Media >> Mount...
Mounting an ISO image in MagicISO (1)
Mounting an ISO image in MagicISO (2)
  2. Use the "Mount CD/DVD image" dialog to browse to your extracted ra95_allied.iso file, click to select it and then click OPEN.

Play the Game

After mounting the ra95_allied.iso file (as per above), you can play the game by simply clicking on Start >> Programs >> Westwood >> Red Alert >> Red Alert Windows 95 Edition. (You can drag-and-drop this start menu button to your desktop to make a handy shortcut.)

The installation process above will permit you to play all the Allied missions, the first Soviet Mission and Skirmish. To play the rest of the Soviet missions, you'll have to extract the Soviet disc ISO file and mount it using MagicISO (see above).

The Scroll Rate is Too Fast in Red Alert!

If you've got a blazingly fast state-of-the-art gaming computer meant to run the likes of Crysis or Bioshock, the scroll rate in Red Alert will probably be way too fast (i.e., scrolling will consist of zipping instantly from one side of the battlefield to the other).

You can remedy this by doing one of two things:

Tweak your REDALERT.INI file

Here's how to do this:

  1. Go to your Red Alert installation directory (typically C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT)
  2. Locate the REDALERT.INI file and open it in Windows Notepad. Then find the following line:

    ScrollRate=6

    and change it to:

    ScrollRate=7

  3. Save the file.
  4. Now to prevent Red Alert from overwriting this setting when you run the game, right-click on REDALERT.INI, click on Properties and click to CHECK 'Read Only' beside Attributes.
  5. Click OK to apply and you're all set.

This should slow down the scroll rate enough to make Red Alert playable. However, if you find the scroll rate is still too fast, you may want to...

Get Mo' Slo

Mo' Slo is a great little program that will allow you to run certain classic PC games and applications at their proper speed by slowing down your computer. It will cost you a few bucks but it'll be worth it if you're a serious classic PC gamer. This will handle all your old PC games that run in Windows (like Red Alert) and can't be run through DOSBox. The version you'll need is Mo'Slo 4BIZ.

On my Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (no video card), I put 20000 in the Mo'Slo 4BIZ 'Slow to' setting and then I ran Red Alert and set the in-game Scroll Rate setting to the lowest. This ran the game beautifully with the game speed running smoothly and the scroll rate perfect (for my tastes anyway).

Hey, I've got winRAR and MagicISO and all, but at the point when I first open up the RA .RAR file, the ISO file that I'm meant to drag to the desktop is shown as a .RAR file instead, which means I can't use MagicISO on it, and therefore can't play the game :S

Very nice, i can play, really thank you man !

  32. Larry says:

I have managed to install up through CounterStrike and had everything working, but got greedy and wanted AFTERMATH to work as well. SO... I screwed it up somewhere.. and had to start all over. I managed to get it back together and re-installed and it worked but when I tried to add CounterStrike, this time it balled up and I could not get it going again. Now I am on my 3rd try, and now it won't install at all. I have tried to uninstall and hunt down all the orphaned files etc... but when I initially try to get MAGIC to open the Allied disk, it does NOT go to the WESTWOOD screen, it goes to the MOUNTED CD, and try as I might I have not been able to get it to install again.

    Any thoughts? Thanks

  33. Dirk Diggler says:

ugh...I tried again with it saved to my desktop but I'm still getting the error message as if I never installed the patch. I don't know what the problem is. I even followed directions form another website (same basic instructions) but it still appears my patch isn't working? I already tried to download the same patch 3 times and I've restarted my pc etc. .....I followed all instructions this is sooooo annoying :(

  34. Dirk Diggler says:

Is it possible to have the game downloaded onto my external drive and just run it from there each time to conserve my laptop memory? I tried to follow the instructions from above but it keeps giving me the error message as if I didn't install the patch. Is this in some way because I'm running from my external drive?

  35. Jack says:

Hey, i succesfully installed and played red alert but there is one huge problem, the game runs with no voice! its pretty frikin' frustrating how can i fix it? (if it contributes: i didnt install anything after magic iso my computer did no trouble for me to require a patch install..)

  36. Carcisswm says:

Thank You very very much! I actually managed to play the game!!! I guess u can go pass go and collect $200 now! lol. Thanks again.

  37. miggy says:

this one.. magicdisc doesnt detect driver (mcdbus), please re-install magicdisc to re-install magicdisc virtual cd/dvd-rom ..

i re-install it hundred times,, but the error still comes up? what should i do?

  38. miggy says:

hey dude.. i got problem here.. coz i finished installing all the magic etc blah.. but then i double click the magicdisc it says "magic doesnt detect driver(mcdbus).. please reinstall..

  39. RaRa says:

    Please help!

  40. RA_Ultimatefan says:

ZOMG! I wana play soo bad, please hurry on my issue. =P

  41. Fithi says:

Are there any patches that work on windows vista or windows 7?

  42. RA_UltimateFan says:

Alright, Well im running a Emachine, Windows Vista home premium 3, It is a 2010 computer, When i switch compatability mode of the Setup.EXE file for 95. Every time i click on the setup i get this error message.

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher. [ OK].

The sooner this issue is resolved for me the better, I love this game and im anticipating the moment i can finally play it again since, my First Edition Disc i had of the game originally got lost when i moved, Also ive never played this game online, so that will be very exciting for me. Please contact me ASAP. I really really wana play this. Tyvm.

    NVM slack.

Sorry for being like.. a nuisance. Ya know. But this site really brought light back to me. :)

  52. Stormer391 says:

One last thing. Do you know how to screenshot red alert ingame? o.o

  53. Stormer391 says:

Wow man. Thanks a lot! :D

I knew I could count on you the second I discovered this site. :ice:

  54. Stormer391 says:

    Hey Slack,
Do you have C&C Tiberium dawn installed? The graphics are very similar to Red Alert and I thought i might try it out.

I got the Nod disc all installed and CNC95 on my comp, but I can't run it. I got that message "the procedure entry point can not be located blah blah". I don't know what patch to use.

  55. Stormer391 says:

No need for the answers man thanks for all your help! :D I adjusted the monitor settings, just like the readme says. Now it works fine, except it's in fullscreen. I guess that's not too bad. Thanks for supplying this! :D

  56. CSPTT says:

    Hi

    everyone!

Heres my problem about installing in Steps:

1: I did go to explore the cd and change it to win95 and win 98/me depends on which help I found.

2: Double click on it and it lunch fin and well untill I press next on not clicking the directX. It just shuts down no warning noting just shuts down.

Now have anyone got a solution for this?

  57. Stormer391 says:

    Hey again,
I'm still trying and trying. One article I found that might help. Somewhere in the RedAlert folder there is a configuration notepad file. Videobackbuffer=no is the correct setting. But I accessed it and it was set on =yes. I tried to change it but everything there is "read-only" files. When I untick the read-only box it says Access denied, where I'm on admin logon.

You might happen to know a solution?

  58. Stormer391 says:

Ah no problem. Yeah you're right on my other computer it's surrounded by black bars. I had a lame theory that it was due to your screen's resolution. Thanks anyway!

  59. Major Slack says:

    @Stormer,

Woops sorry... I've never had the problem with the cutoff at the top of the screen problem so I can't advise you on that. As for the aspect ratio, yes you're right, the proper aspect ratio should put black bars on either side of your screen. This is a video card problem that is clearly documented in the game readme file. Short answer is there is nothing you can do about it except maybe try installing Red Alert on another computer. Here I have 3 computers and only one of them will display Red Alert with the proper aspect ratio. The other two stretch the view horizontally. If you check some Youtube videos, you'll see a lot of other people have the same problem.

  60. Stormer391 says:

I'm assuming you're working a solution to my problem now? If you forgot, please try and help. :)

  61. Major Slack says:

    @Pedro,

After some experimentation, I was able to reproduce your problem with setup.exe. See my comment directly above this one. Your problem most likely has to do with having the wrong CD label.

  62. Pedro says:

Well im doing everything right. besides this is not the first time i use magicISO / Daemon Tools etc and im opening the right ISO file because there is only 1 file in the .RAR anyway.

But the problem still. with compatibility or without compatibility when i run SETUP.EXE nothing happens.
i have tried INSTALL.EXE too and its the same thing.

PS: when i double click the SETUP.exe nothing happens but something called wowexec.exe appears in the system manager

Help me plz im dieing to play this game again!!

  63. Fam3 says:

    Thanks a Lot Man!!!

  64. Major Slack says:

    TO ALL:

The Red Alert game file download links in the tutorial have been updated to the FileShack links provided by Dr. Watson (thanks Doc!). I've checked them out and they work perfectly.

For those having problems with no reaction after clicking on setup.exe, make sure the virtual drive created by MagicISO has the correct CD label after mounting the game file disc. If you're trying to install/run the Allied disc, the CD label should read 'CD1'. If the Soviet, 'CD2'. If you don't have the correct CD label, unmount everything, restart your computer and try again.

  65. Stormer391 says:

Don't worry about the questions above. I got the Aftermath working and Counterstrike. Just need a little patience for the other 2 discs.

One thing though. When I play, the Credits bar at the top along with the options is sliced off by black. And there's a huge bit of black at the bottom. So it's as if the screen moved itself up a tiny bit. Any way to fix this? And it's a bit like fullscreen.. I believe the proper screen should be that it has a big black border around the game screen?

  66. Pedro says:

Hello im having a little problem over here

Well when i try to execute the SETUP.EXE nothing happens, nothing open and i dont get error msgs.

    What should i do ?

PS: i have set the compatibility mode to windows 95 like the tutorial and im using magicISO. Well i have done everything exactly like the tutorial said.
    Help me plz ^^

  67. Dr. Watson says:

Works perfect. And thanks for the patch download. If the above download isn't working, use this one:

    Dowload RA1: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=76322

  68. Stormer391 says:

By the way, do you have to remove the original Red Alert? I've had this thing installed for years now. But one day my parents destroyed the disks and I'm wondering if this tutorial is to lead you to download and install the game from scratch.

You know how in the game the big bar on the left where you control your statistics and build units? The icons of the units changed from very detailed graphics to crappy animated ones. Any way to fix this?

  69. Stormer391 says:

Well the download links didn't work. I had to get a torrent for the disc files and the Soviet one works just like it should in the tutorial. The reason why I didn't use the links because at not even half way the download finishes and I can't extract from ZIP [file is corrupt or something]. Right now I'm trying to get the Allies but the torrent isn't working for some reason. And the files from the link you gave us doesn't work. Any ideas? What I'm trying to say is I can't install the disc copies from your link.

  70. king says:

..i changed compatibility mode to win95.....i tried to open and still said not valid win32 application....what to do eh....?

  71. Major Slack says:

Sorry for the delay guys. I've been super busy this week.

    @Bloke,

Did you remember to mount the .iso file before trying to run the game? If so, then go to My Computer and check to see that your virtual drive has the correct CD label on it. If you mounted the Allied disc, it should say 'CD1'. If you mounted the Soviet Disc, it should say CD2. If not, unmount everything, restart your computer and then mount the desired disc (Allied or Soviet). Then go to My Computer and right click on your virtual drive and click on Open. Then double-click on 'setup.exe' and you should get the Red Alert menu. Click on Proceed and/or Play Game and it should work. MagicISO gets glitched up sometimes and it retains memory of the label of the previously mounted disc.

    ----------

    @Deniel,

Sorry but I never had the not valid win32 application error so I don't know what to say. You could try disabling visual themes in the compatibility mode dialog. Also click to clear 'Turn off advanced text services for this program'.

    ----------

    @Johnson,

    Try this:

Go to My Computer and right click on your virtual drive and click on Open. Then double-click on 'setup.exe' and see if you get the Red Alert menu. If so, click on Proceed and/or Play Game and it should work.

  72. Johnson says:

dude... i did everything right i got no errors no nothing. but when i try to run the game nothing happends.. like it does not open.. what do i do?

  73. Deniel says:

  76. man says:

  77. man says:

man I can't I already downloaded those files of the red alert twice and it didn't work ,is that broken?

please help when I unpack the first disk there is an error message

    What should I do?

I am downloading again the allied.disc but I think, it won't work
    Please I need you help!!

  78. Major Slack says:

    Ryan,

It's likely your version of WinRAR is too old to deal with the zip file OR the file got corrupted during the download. Try updating to the latest version of WinRAR and when you download the file try to keep your network activity to a minimum (like only download the file and nothing else.. don't even browse the web).

  79. Ryan says:

When I try to extract the iso files from WinRAR it comes up with a error box at the end that says something along the lines of CRC error, corrupted data, any ideas on what the problem may be?

  80. zach says:

Alright :) :D I got all the missions Soviet and Allied thank you soo much for all of your help, I hope I wasn't too much of a hastle or a burden on you but I really appreciate it, oh and this games kicks some major ass!!!

    Zach

  81. Major Slack says:

    That's great Zach! :o)

And to play the Soviets, just download and extract the Soviet disc and then mount it on MagicISO the same way you did with the Allies. You don't have to install anything. (Check under the 'Play the Game' heading above.)

  82. zach says:

Oh! do I have to go through the same process with the soviet disk/file?

  83. zach says:

Holy Bananas I am playing red alert!!! :):) :D thank you so much for your help if I need anything else I'll comment

  84. Major Slack says:

That's correct. The Download Site 1 link at the very top of the page.

  85. zach says:

So just that we're clear I click on the link, go to Download site 1 on the most recent version, and once thats done downloading, double click to install

  86. Major Slack says:

    Zach,

Yeah it's possible you downloaded the wrong MagicISO program because it's freeware. I just tried downloading the file again from the very link on this page and doubleclicked to install it and I never got any prompt to buy it, register it, try it, nothing like that. Right-click on the the MagicISO icon on your desktop and click on 'Properties' to get the file name. It should be named 'setup_magicdisk.exe'.

  87. zach says:

Could i have possibley downloaded the wrong MagicISO? I took it straight from your link again, oh and I run Windows XP as my operating system if that matters.

  88. zach says:

When i double click on the icon it asks if i want to buy it, register it, or try it...do i have to buy it?

  89. Major Slack says:

    Zach,

Did you forget to install MagicISO? Sounds like you haven't installed it yet.

  90. zach says:

alright so i drug my allied disk to my desktop, but i do not have a magicISO icon in my system tray and when i right click on the magicISO icon on my desktop and go to virtualCD/DVDs it doesn't say a drive it says install MagicDisk Virtual CD/DVD Manager(freeware), sorry im not so good at this

  91. Major Slack says:

    Zach,

I completely updated this tutorial and tested it. Try to run through it now and please get back to me with the results. And yes, when you drag-and-drop the ra95_allied.iso to your desktop, it will go through an extraction process. That's normal.

  92. Major Slack says:

    Sorry Zach,

This tutorial was written based on the original download you could get from the EA site (which has now been removed). I didn't realize commandandpatch.com download renamed the .iso file and separated the XP patch from the original download. I'm rewriting this tutorial now. New instructions will be up shortly... Basically, you don't extract the .iso file. Just drag-and-drop it to your desktop from the WinRAR program. You'll also have to download the XP patch here:

    http://majorslack.com/downloads/RA108USP.EXE

  93. zach says:

ok what do you mean by clicking on the RedAlert1_Allied Disk subfolder? I only have the Allied Disk with the three little books symbol next to it and when I double click it, it starts extracting it, it is that what I'm supposed to do? extract it?

  94. zach says:

I got the allied and the soviet disk from the links on your page like it said

  95. Major Slack says:

    Zach,

Where did you get the download from?

  96. zach says:

oh and zach is joe i was using a different email account fyi

  97. zach says:

well instead of having subfolders in the winRAR for the allied disk, under the type section in winRAR it says it a MagicISO document instead of being in the WinRAR archive, idk what i did wrong

  98. Major Slack says:

    Joe,

I don't understand. If you can get it open in the program (assuming you mean WinRAR) what step can you not get to work? Can you be more specific?

  99. Joe says:

I can't get the winRAR step to work when i open it in the program :(
